The director of the film, Jeff Goldstein, not only wanted the movie to embody the characteristics of mainstream entertainment but a unique calling card inspired by the more classical styles of filmmaking. Having studied the visual and existential themes of French, Spanish, and Italian cinema, there existed an underlying desire to explore themes
involving human psyche and satirical plots.

Having directed over ten films ranging in diversity, Jeff is also a cinematographer with a distinct eye for framing and composition. Currently involved in several different projects throughout the valley, he is working on writing his next film. Fresh Canned Help was recently made part of Phoenix Film Festival’s 2010 official selection and has also been entered into a wide range of film festivals for this year.

Fresh Canned Help is a thought-provoking comedy about a therapist who needs to see a therapist.

Here at Disc2day, we congratulate Jeff for this wonderful achievement and we continue to support and provide him with any of his CD/DVD Duplication and CD/DVD Replication services.

For more information about the film visit www.freshcannedhelp.com

A New Young Artist's Success Story

Bobby Mares is a one man pop/rock/electro band My Genuine Find. Hearing their stories, and meeting them make you realize that Phoenix has tons of talented people. Almost everyday, Disc2day meets new fresh talents who like everybody else, want to make it big. Though, there is one particular artist that has been our proud costumer for as long as Disc2day has been around. His name is Carvin Jones.

Bio from CarvinJones.com
Carvin Jones was born in Lufkin, Texas. At a very young age, he was seduced to the blues by listening to BB King records his grandfather constantly played in the house.

By March, 1991, Carvin and his band had gained tremendous popularity, and were playing at clubs all over the Valley. They have maintained a consistent seven nights-a-week performance schedule since then. In March 2000, Carvin celebrated his 3000th performance!

Over the past years, the Carvin Jones Band has opened for guitar legends BB King, Santana and Albert King, and has performed with Joe Cocker and the Fabulous Thunderbird's at the House of Blues 1996 Tour in Phoenix. The Band opened for REO Speedwagon in 1998 at New Year's Eve, and has been a feature band of Fiesta Bowl's New Year's Eve Block Parties for the past two years.

The Carvin Jones Music Show, a 1/2 hour cable TV show promo, included interviews with Carvin, performance clips, local gig calendar, and website plug. The Show aired during February-March, 2000, once a week, on various local Arizona cable channels. The Band has also been featured on Arizona's Channel 3, Channel 15, and Channel 10 News stations and is still featured on Glendale's Channel 11 regularly. Carvin has been a staple of the Glendale, AZ Jazz and Blues fest for several years - much to Arizonans delight!

Carvin began touring Europe in 1999. He has performed with the likes of Buddy Miles, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, John Mayell, Jimmie Vaughn, Ten Years After, Eric Burden and The Animals. In 2007, Carvin and his band opened for the legendary Walter Trout - twice - with rave revews! He has made many appearances on European Television and has regular airplay on several Blues dedicated radio shows throughout Europe. Carvin regularly headlines many European Blues Festivals - including The Pokey Hole Festival (UK), Skegness Rock & Blues Festival (UK), The Warrenpoint Festival (Ireland), Bejar Blues Festival (Spain), Colne Blues Festival (UK), and several others throughout Italy, Spain, Germany, & Holland.

In 2007, Carvin welcomed into the band two amazing Italian musicians, who tour with Carvin full-time throughout Europe. On drums, Gianpaolo Feola - from Sant' Angelo d'Alife, Italy - has brought tremendous energy and excitement to Carvin's all ready electrifying show. Gianpaolo has played with many popular Italian bands throughout Italy and complements Carvin's versitility with his ability to play many types of music... from classic slow Blues & Jazz to classic Rock and Pop. Michele (Mike) Califano - from Naples, Italy - is a self-taught, natural talent. He began playing bass in December 1996 - watching and learning from 'Queen' concerts on DVD - loving the big sound of the bass. Among Mike's influences are Tommy Shannon, John Deacon, John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, & Geddy Lee. Like Gianpaolo, Mike brings an amazing amount of energy and versitility to the Carvin Jones experience. Together, Carvin, Mike, and Gianpaolo have been heralded the "Best Blues/Rock Band in Europe".

Disc2day is proud to be the preferred duplicator of choice for all of Carvin Jones' CD Duplication and CD replication needs as well as DVD duplication and DVD replications.

NEW PRICES ON DIGIPAKS

Have you ever gone to a music store and purchased an album just because of its packaging?

Well, DigiPaks have the way of doing just that. Since the majority of CD albums and DVD movies are still sold in jewel cases or amaray cases, anything that is packaged differently has a better chance of standing out. The packaging is one of the first alternatives for jewel cases that is why a lot of studios, costumers, and artists love it.

DigiPaks are like cardboard sleeves which open up like a book to reveal a plastic tray glued inside which holds the CD.

This year, Disc2day is lowering their prices on Digipak packages in order for costumers to have different looks on their cd and dvd packages. Plus affordable!

STUDENT WINS ANOTHER FILM FESTIVAL

On January 16, 2010, Arizona student filmmakers gathered for the 4th Annual Arizona Student Film Festival. The festival recognizes talented student filmmakers that are enrolled in third grade through college in any Arizona public, charter, or private educational institution. The event showcases student produced films, videos, documentaries and animation anytime while the filmmaker attended a recognized Arizona public, charter, or private educational institution. The Overall Winner for Best Short College Category is our very own DVD Duplication and DVD Replication customer, Kenneth Yanga for his movie, True Colors which tells different stories of four homosexual men concerning love, hate, and acceptance. Being a winner of the festival, his movie will be going to the Annual Phoenix Film Festival, the biggest film festival in the state of Arizona. True Colors also won 1st Runner Up at the Moving Pictures Film Competition which Yanga has been invited to go to. The awards ceremony will take place at The Meyer Gallery on Main Street in Park City, Utah the same time as the Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals.
There is no doubt that Disc2day is the proud duplicator for Mr. Kenneth Yanga and the True Colors.
Check more information about the film at www.truecolorsmovie.com

Best way to archive files? They either fail without notice, or they get full pretty fast. Data Robotics, Inc. seems to have the solution. The Data Robotics drive (or simply Drobo) seems unreal and too good to be true. To make long story short, it is a little black box with 4 hard drive slots. You can throw in any 3.5" internal hard drives you have lying around and it will turn them into one big drive. So if one fails, your data is safely stored on the other drives (so pretty much like RAID). Those companies like Disc2day will certainly need hard drives like this specially for all those videos, graphic design files, audio, and many more. For more info, see the links below:

http://www.drobo.com/Products/drobodemo.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sENCMKXBUc

(from the review of Ryan Block between RAID 5 and Drobo - engadget)

Setup
RAID 5 - Three or more same drives required. (Some arrays will accept dissimilar drives, but will function as lowest common denominator. So two 300GB drives and one 20GB drive will yield a 40GB array.)
Drobo - One to four drives supported; two drives necessary for redundancy

Installation
RAID 5 - Drives in caddies or typically somehow screwed/fastened into the enclosure. From here you may have numerous means of access, including eSATA, USB 2.0, FireWire, even NAS.
Drobo - Drives slide into and are secured by enclosure with no tools. USB 2.0 only, sorry.

Redundancy method and data awareness
RAID 5 - Block-level striping with spanning parity. Array is block-level unaware of data though, meaning nothing intelligent is done with free space.
Drobo - Virtual storage pool is redundant, but also block-level aware, meaning that it recognizes free space, and automatically uses it for multiple invisible backups should drive sectors become corrupt. (The added benefit of block-level data awareness is external storage indicators, which show how much storage is being used in its series of LEDs.)

Redundancy overhead
RAID 5 - Space cost of any one of the identical disks in the array. (So four 250GB drives yields a 750GB array, raw.)
Drobo - Space of the largest disk in the array. (So two 250GB drives and two 500GB drives yields a 1TB array, raw.)

File systems
RAID 5 - Format any file system.
Drobo - HFS or NTFS. (Limited FAT32 support, future file systems to be added.)

Failure
RAID 5 - If a drive dies your array is at risk and goes into rebuild mode when you swap out the bad disk. Depending on your RAID array, you may or may not be able to use it during rebuild. Alternately, if a drive starts writing corrupt data, that data may stay corrupt, with backup recovery being your only option of restoration.
Drobo - If a drive dies your array still goes into rebuild mode, but your data may still be protected. Depending on how much capacity you're using, if there's enough free space in the array, your Drobo may still be able to ensure full redundancy. (Again, thank that block-level aware array system.) If your Drobo doesn't have enough free space during a disk loss, your data will be at risk; after inserting a new drive it will go into rebuild mode, but will still continue to be available.

Upgrading
RAID 5 - Users must back up contents and replace their entire array of drives to increase array storage. (Read: no drive recycling.)

Drobo - Upgrade storage a drive at a time. If you have empty bays, simply insert a new drive -- that storage is instantaneously available. If you are out of bays then remove smallest drive and add its larger replacement. Once that array is rebuilt and the new storage is available, remove the next smallest, etc. until you've reached the capacity you desire. Drobo can support 4TB+, and can supposedly address an infinite amount of space as drives push past the 1TB mark.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.disc2day.com/cd_dvd_news/2010/01/best-way-to-archive-files-drobo.html' title='Best way to archive files? They are Joshua (21yrs), Andrew (19yrs), Rachel (15yrs) and Maria (14yrs). Rachel leads the singing beautifully with her sister Maria backing her up. Joshua is the heart and soul of the group. His gift of playing anything he picks up comes through as the heartbeat of each song. Andrew's rhythm guitar playing and harmonica fits like a glove perfectly. This group brings a mixture of bluegrass gospel and ballads with strong Christian beliefs and values. There are many ways from leaving your video camera on a tripod and press record (but you'd be working with hours and hours of unnecessary footage). Another is using an SLR or any photo cameras with a tripod, and make sure, whatever you do, do not move the camera. The most convenient way though is to have a remote or time-lapse "wand". Below, I am sharing pretty much the best way to do timelapse photography (using Canon 20D for an example). It can get pretty boring, but I can assure you, the result is priceless with some amazing footage! Have fun.

Timelapse by Actual Films (Jon Shenk jon@actualfilms.net)

Dial camera to manual or "M" mode using switch on top left (looking down) of camera.

Adjust shutter speed using the dial right behind the trigger button (on top right-hand side of the camera). In order to achieve good time-lapse shots (especially for landscapes with trees, grass), I have found that ideally you want to have a relatively long shutter (1 or 2 seconds). This reduces jerkiness when things moving in the frame.

Adjust aperture by using large dial on the back panel of the camera (you need to have the off/on switch set in the "top" position so that the two white lines line up in order to adjust the f-stop. Ideally, you want to have the f-stop around 5.6 or 8. If you go to 22 you risk seeing "dust spots" on the lens, etc.

Adjust "ASA" by pressing the "DRIVE-ISO" button on top of the camera - after you press this button, use the large dial on the rear of the camera to adjust. You can set it anywhere between 100-3200. For exteriors daylight, you'll find that you want to have it on 100.

Use ND filters. For daylight time-lapse shots, you'll find, given the long exposure length, that you will always be struggling against over-exposure. There are two ND filters in the kit. One of the filters is actually a "variable ND." If you use the variable ND, you can use it as another means of setting exposure (it actually works quite well). Be careful not to dial the variable ND all the way to "max" - you’ll notice that at the "max" setting, it creates a strange vignette. Also, you can "stack" the two ND filters. With both ND filters, you can reduce exposure up to 5 or 6 stops. So, they are quite useful on exterior shots.

Step-down ring. When using the ND filters on the longer lens, you need to use the step down ring. I usually leave it on, so you might need to take it off the filter when using the wide lens.

Clean lens and camera! Before you initiate a shot, take lens off and use canned air to blow out dust from the inside of camera. When doing this, it is v. important to blow off the CCD itself - you can do this by setting the camera at a v. long shutter (like 10 seconds) which can be achieved by using the dial right behind the camera trigger. With the throat exposed (cap off), fire the trigger of the camera - when the mirror lifts up, blow baby blow! Also - clean lenses and filters using fluid and tissue. Take precautions to clean BEFORE each time-lapse session. Dust is a major problem with these shots.

Use the time-lapse "wand." Attach time-lapse wand to left side of camera by pulling back the rubber "cap" and inserting three-pin plug into the appropriate receptacle. Using the LCD readout on the "wand," you can set the time-lapse interval by pressing the dial on the right side of the wand in, then scroll the dial to change the number of seconds, minutes, hours. Press the start-stop button to begin sequence. The large grey button is simply another trigger button. You can use this to do "test" shots.

Make sure the lens is on manual focus (MF) while doing time-lapse shots in order to avoid "breathing."

Make sure the white balance is set to DAYLIGHT or TUNGSTEN and NOT to AUTO. This also avoids "breathing" between different white balances between shots. You can set white balance by press the AF-WB button on top of the camera and then use the large dial on the rear of the camera to choose the correct setting.

MENU - use the menu button (in conjunction with the dial/button) on the rear of the camera to set quality and other settings. I usually leave the quality on Large (L), but M is good enough for HD (if you are not going to be doing much cropping.

Remember that these images will be cropped to 16X9, so compose with that in mind.

You can use the camera's built into little "scope" meter by pressing the INFO button on the back of the camera.

TEST Image - always shoot a test image to look at on the LCD before leaving the camera to do a time-lapse. You can zoom into the image by using the two buttons on the rear, right top on the camera - to check focus, etc.

Insert a CF (compact flash card) into right side of camera. There are three cards in the kit (an 8 G, and 2 - 2 G cards). This should be plenty to take several time-lapse shots.

At the end of the day, copy the contents of the cards to a computer by using the USB card reader. If you want to check some images, you can easily pop them open in Preview on the Mac.

Image stabilization (on barrel of the lens) seems to work fine with time-lapse.

Battery charger - pretty straightforward. There are two batteries. There is also an adapter for AA batteries in case you cannot charge.

Lenses - there are two lenses in the kit. Wide: 10-22mm and Longer: 17-85mm. Quality-wise, they are both pretty sharp. With the wide lens, be careful about vignetting with ND filters.

More tutorials to come.

American Idol on Disc2day

About two and half years ago, the FOX's reality TV show American Idol crowned Jordin Sparks as the year's America's Favorite Singer. She was that young 17-year-old from Glendale, Arizona who won America's hearts. A year later, another singer from Glendale made it to the top 12—David Hernandez. Though, he ended up twelfth place, he still managed to gain popularity across the nation and specially his home town. He has made appearances on TV and events like CBS Early Show and performed on FOX's The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet. He finished a run performing his own show at the upscale nightclub Barcelona Scottsdale located in Scottsdale, Arizona in June 2009.
He also opened for Grammy award winning artist John Legend at the Declare Yourself Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. on January 18, 2009.

On his American Idol "Fast Facts" page, David cites musical influences as: Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Alicia Keys, Anthony Hamilton, Michael Jackson, Peabo Bryson. When asked to list his top pop artists, he cites; Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Peabo Bryson. Randy Jackson claimed after one of his performances on American Idol that Hernandez has a Stevie Wonder vibe coming from his singing style. Hernandez himself described his sound as pop and R&B influenced.

This holiday season, David, while working with the Music Media Group, is releasing a Christmas CD with songs like "This Christmas" and "Let it Snow" in the arrangements. Disc2day is proud to be David and the Music Media Group's preferred duplicator. The standard burn side for disc replication is silver, while disc duplication has either light green or light blue tints. Though, there might not be any significant difference in quality and playability, some costumers would still like that "replication" look. Now, we finally have a solution to this dilemma. Disc2day is happy to announce the release of the new CD-R that is pure silver on the bottom. These burnable CD-Rs look just like replicated CDs that you buy in music stores. The discs have Phtalocyanine dye, which is transparent in certain types. Because of the silver reflection layer it seems that the bottom of the CD-R is silver.

Now you don't have to spend more money on extra discs that you don't need, while keeping that same professionally pressed "replicated discs" look that you see in stores. And what's nice about this is you can order as low as 25 discs. Come check them out. You won't be disappointed!

Disc-or-Treat!

We all know that every year on All Hallows Eve, trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of that night and it has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters. What if instead of giving out candies to kids to prevent them from ruining their beautiful teeth, or suddenly becoming so hyper, we hand out CDs with today's popular music? It is proven that listening to music is very beneficial. Some of these benefits are: change the person's mood in a good way, Growing field of health care, Helps with Stress Management, Breathing and Heart Rate - Nervous System, Brain Waves - Strong beat can simulate brain waves to resonate sync with the beat, State of Mind - You may imagine different things while listening to songs, Lowering Blood Pressure, and much more. A little bit of Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers plus CD duplication will do just the right trick.
Disc2day can turn around products very quick. I know my younger brother doesn't. He came up to me the other day, and asked me what was that "big black rectangular contraption" on top of my TV the other day. I said to myself, "It's official. Video Cassettes, Tapes, etc. are phasing out!" It's an obsolete technology, now that we have DVDs, CDs, and particularly Blu-ray technologies. In addition, being an old technology is not just another reason why it's time for conversion. If your VCR doesn't eat your VHS tape, the film in it will slowly degrade over time-whether you play it often or you don't. Tapes can start falling apart in as little as 3 years, whereas DVDs can last anywhere from 20 to (some say) even 250 years.

Here at Disc2day DVD Replication, we have the right tools to convert your tapes to DVD. If you have old tapes, wedding videos, and anything of importance that need preservation, we're here to help. The company has recently added a high quality thermal printer to the family. The Rimage Everest 600 CD printer creates colorful high-resolution photo-realistic labels bonded directly to the surface of printable CDs and DVDs. It is considered as the highest print quality in the industry. Enhancements over our previous Everest III printer include: increased color matching, great with halftones and gradients better solid color fills, and sharper text, Colorful, 600dpi resolution DVD printing! Not to mention smude-proof, water-proof, scratch-proof, and fade-proof. You will be amazed how great the print is. There is no doubt that Disc2day is more than satisfied with this new addition.

Another addition to the company's already amazing services is the ability to cello wrap on smaller runs of 999 units and lower. Disc2day used to be able to only offer shrink wrap for CD or DVD duplication jobs of less than 1000 units. Cello wrapping is done as if you are wrapping gifts. The plastic is folded over the corners, as opposed to "shrinking" the wrap over the product using an oven. Cello wrapped products are typically found on store bought products.

Please don't hesitate to ask about our new services and if it applies to your CD or DVD duplication projects.

New Heart-Beat Film Festival Releases

Heart-Beat Releasing Two New Films in Festival Circuit

Almost everyone has heard of Sundance Film Festival, and almost every year in winter, tons of film fanatics make pilgrimage to Park City, UT-home of the largest Independent Film Festival in the United States. At the event, visitors can meet filmmakers and watch several independent films. Let me tell you something, you don't have to come in winter to meet a filmmaker and see his/her work. At Park City, a film production company called Heart-Beat Productions is there 365 days a year. Founded by writer/director J.L. Topkis in 2004, Heart-Beat has already gotten major acclaim in film festivals across the country. Last year, ESCAPISM premiered at The Newport Beach Film Festival in California, and took home Best Student Film at The Bare Bones International Film Festival (you can watch it here). Having made the film at age 17, Topkis and his team were surprised at just how many festivals they got into (many weren't even entered in the Student category). This year, Heart-Beat is hoping to run the festival circuit with their two new films, TWICE OVER and SHE IS. J.L. Topkis is a Film Production major at Emerson College, and is currently writing a feature film slated for independent production in 2012. "We've been setting goals for ourselves since the 8th grade, and we haven't failed to meet one yet. We're going to go all the way because we're never going to stop working towards what we want as careers."

Disc2day is proud to be the preferred duplicator for all of J.L. Topkis's DVD duplication and DVD replication needs. If you want your artwork to print sharp, the resolution needs to be higher. What is Resolution? Resolution is the measurement of how many dots/pixels fit into one inch (hence the term, Dots Per Inch). The higher resolution, the sharper the image will be. In the print world, the standard resolution for the final layout is 300 DPI—anything lower than that will look fuzzy, blurry, or jagged edges/pixilated. One of the main thing that a lot of people misunderstand is enlarging the file to 300 DPI from 72 DPI doesn’t necessarily fix the resolution problem (Resolution and image size are inversely proportional to each other. Enlarge an image, the resolution decreases; reduce an image, the resolution increases.)

Monitors on the other hand usually have a display setting of 72 DPI. If you know that the image you are working on will end up on websites or screens, 72 DPI if sufficient. However, it is important to know that using images from online is not the best way to go for print because the majority of the files on the web are set to 72 dpi for fast loading.

Here at Disc2day, we highly recommend artists and graphic designers to provide their art files at the highest resolution possible for discs (CD or DVD), posters, and inserts (entrapment, traycards, etc) printing for better quality and the best looking for your CD/DVD package!

DigiPaks

Have you ever gone to a music store and purchased an album just because of its packaging?

Well, DigiPaks have the way of doing just that. This process is the highest quality CD printing or DVD printing that you can print on a CD-R or DVD-R. The quality is 173 Dots Per Inch (for full colors), with a gloss finish and as well as smudge proof (water proof). This print is actually a higher resolution than the industry standard Silk Screen which is done at 125 DPI. In contrast to thermal prints, Inkjet printers work by placing extremely tiny droplets of liquid ink onto the disc surface. If you look closely on the printed surface, you will see tiny dots. Though, there are lots of disadvantages on inkjet prints. One major disadvantage is ink bleeding, where ink is carried sideways away from the desired location. It leaves a muddy appearance. Also, it is not waterproof, even the smallest drop of water can cause blurring and running. At Disc2day, we use the highest quality thermal print on discs!

DVD Duplication of True Colors the Movie

A local student filmmaker's short documentary has recently been acquired for international distribution and sales. The short film, True Colors is about four homosexual men and their life stories on how they have dealt with issues concerning love, hate and acceptance. Taryl Hargens from Arizona K-12 Center states that, "this compelling story speaks strongly about the power one holds when the desire for love and acceptance penetrates the walls of hatred and adversity. The heart of the filmmaker shines through as the words and visual images prompt us to think about the ramifications of a society absent of human compassion."

The student filmmaker, Kenneth Yanga, did not expect much from his documentary. He only wanted to share stories about the homosexual community through the voices of four selected individuals to teach and educate not just the heterosexual community but as well as the gay community. The film has been picked up by Ouat Media of Toronto, ON who strictly distributes short films worldwide.

Disc2day is proud to be Kenneth Yanga's DVD Duplication & Replication Company and we will continue to provide Kenny with any CD & DVD services he may need throughout his advancing career.

To learn more about the film, please go to www.truecolorsmovie.com.

NOTE:
Standard turn time applies upon art approval.
